By-election in Theewaterskloof: ANC condemns intimidation by UDM members

26 December 2003

The ANC Western Cape condemns in the strongest possible terms the intimidation tactics of gun-toting UDM thugs.

The UDM is one of four parties contesting tomorrow=B9s (Wednesday 27 February 2002) by-election in Ward 9, Theewaterskloof.

Over the weekend six ANC members have been doing canvassing and putting up posters in the area.

They were approached by at least three men with UDM t-shirts, who all had guns. They then proceeded to verbally abuse and assault the ANC canvassers. They took several pamphlets and posters from our members and destroyed it. At least one person pointed his gun to the head of one of our members.

The ANC and the members have laid charges of intimidation, assault and pointing of a firearm at the local police station against the UDM members. Their identities is known to the local ANC leadership.

Said ANC Western Cape Provincial Secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha: "We condemn the actions of the UDM in the strongest possible terms. The action of these UDM members come after a visit to the area by Bantu Holomisa. This is unacceptable.

"We call on our members to remain calm and not to take the law into their own hands. Let the police do their work in arresting the culprits.

This is a very important by-election for us and we will not get distracted."
