Memorial service for late ANC Councillor Gocini

10 December 2003, Wednesday The ANC will be having a memorial service for the late City of Cape Town Councillor Tony Gocini. He died last week at his home in Guguletu after a long battle with cancer.

The memorial service will take place from 18h00 at the Guguletu Civic Hall on Thursday 10 December 2003.

At the time of his dead he was the ANC ward councillor for ward 42. He leaves behind his wife Nomsi, two sons aged 37 and 30, and four grandchildren.

Comrade Tony was a prominent and active member in the Western Cape Civic Association (WCCA) in the early 80¹s.

He was part of the committee that helped ensure the formation of the UDF in August 1983. He worked tirelessly in mass civic campaigns like the "Asiyi eKhayelitsha", red meat boycotts and campaigns against the demolition of backyard shacks.

Gocini, also known as "Longs", was a very pleasant person to work with and was always joking, says his comrades who worked closely with him.

He was instrumental in pulling the Youth from the street corners to form karate groups as he was an instructor (black belt). Tony also trained women, some whom were members of Umkhonto we Sizwe.

Tony worked in the WCCA until it became the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco). When the ANC was unbanned Tony became a member of the ANC. He was elected Ward Councillor for Ward 42 and was re-elected in 2000.
