ANC-WC PEC meeting of Saturday, 14 october 2006

15 October 2006, Sunday

The ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) met on Saturday, 14 October 2006 for a scheduled PEC meeting, attended by the entire provincial leadership, MEC`s, national deployees and representatives from the leagues and after constructive deliberations, reached the following conclusions:

ATTACKS ON THE ANC PRESIDENT

The PEC noted with extreme concern the recent attacks on the ANC President Thabo Mbeki by certain individuals within the SACP.

We remain convinced that the attack by the provincial secretary of the SACP, Khaya Magaxa, on the the president of the ANC and the ANC as an organisation, is unfortunate, disrespectful, mis-guided and shallow and should be condemned in the strongest terms.

The ANC is preparing for its national conference and policy conference next year. Both opportunities will give everyone, including the alliance partners, the opportunity to engage in dignified discussions on the strategies and tactics of the organisation.

We call on all alliance partners to respect the integrity of the ANC, its structures and its leadership and we also want to again express our full and unequivocal support to the President, officials of the ANC and the NEC.

CHANGING THE MUNICIPAL STRUCTURE IN CITY OF CAPE TOWN

The ANC welcomes the intervention by the national Minister for Local and Provincial Government, comrade Sydney Mufamadi, and we hope that this intervention will bring about a lasting, speedy and workable solution that will be in the best interest of all the people of Cape Town.

We remain convinced that inclusive government is needed in a case where no single party has won the elections and where a government is formed with the sole intention to exclude others.

We also encourage all affected parties to engage with the MEC on this matter as the process is determined by law and those parties that choose to disrespect the process are not only irresponsible and motivated by narrow political and material interest but this also smacks of disrespect for the law.

PROVINCIAL ALLIANCE SUMMIT

The PEC agreed that a Provincial Alliance Summit should be convened this coming Saturday, 21 October 2006 and that the provincial secretariat must take the lead in organising this important meeting.
