ANC-WC supports Provincial Government decision on Oudtshoorn

15 March 2007

The African National Congress Western Cape fully supports the decision of the Western Cape Government to place the Oudtshoorn Municipality under administration in terms of Section 139 of the Constitution. The ANC is satisfied that the shocking state of affairs in the Municipality warrants the action and that the Provincial Government has followed the necessary procedures before taking the decision.

The ANC is confident that placing the Municipality under administration is the only way to create the conditions for a return to good governance and management in the council and restore proper levels of service delivery. It is vital that the confidence of the community, including the business community is restored and that racial harmony and tolerance is rebuilt. No effort should be spared to ensure that that the KKNK festival proceeds smoothly with the support of all sectors of the community, including the business community.

The shocking state of affairs which led to the Provincial Government decision should serve as a lesson to the Democratic Alliance of the dangers of cobbling together local coalitions at the expense of proper governance. This in turn has led to the fanning of racial tensions and undermined community and business confidence.
