ANC responds to Zille`s comments on Provinces

11 May 2007

The African National Congress views Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille`s recent comments on the possible reduction in the number of provinces as little more than political grandstanding.

In March, the ANC released a discussion document to its structures, ahead of its National Policy Conference, on the function and role of provinces. This is part of the ANC`s effort to consider whether the country`s current governance model serves the interests of the South African people.

The document discusses a number of options for possible changes, but does not make any specific recommendations.

The ANC wants to encourage a rational, measured and informed debate on how government at all levels can better meet the needs of all our people.

It is unfortunate that the DA`s new leader is not prepared to engage in reasoned debate, resorting instead to dramatic flourishes of political hyperbole.
