Councillor Wilma Brady`s improper conduct must be investigated by Housing and Local Government MEC

ANC-WC statement: Councillor Wilma Brady`s improper conduct must be investigated by Housing and Local Government MEC

12 June 2007

The ANC is in possession of a letter signed by Councillor Wilma Brady, which is attached. This is a flagrant breach of the Councillor`s Code of Conduct and the Municipal Finance Management Act. The letter is signed in Councillor Brady’s capacity as the Chairperson of Sub-Council 21 and on behalf of the Provincial Housing Board. The letter addressed to a contractor, is illegal and improper on both the above counts.

It is alleged that relatives and friends of Councillor Brady received houses subsequently constructed. The ANC is in possesion of documentation which points to such irregularities. Mayor Zille visited the housing development and was pictured in the press in the presence of Councillor Brady.

Mayor Zille and Councillor Wilma Brady should provide a full and clear explanation for the reasons for the letter, the allegations arising there rom and what steps will be taken in this regard.

The ANC calls for a full investigation into the matter by the Provincial MEC for Local Government and Housing, Richard Dyantyi and requests that he report back to the legislature in this regard.

Statement to be given by:
Patrick McKenzie MPL in Provincial Legislature today.
