ANC-WC condemns N2 protests

10 September 2007

The ANC condemns the protests which have closed down the N2 today near Langa. The ANC calls for members of the public to protest within the law. The closing down of the N2 and the ripple effect this has on the economy is unacceptable.

Provincial Secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha said;

"The closing down of the N2 is unacceptable and based on either a lack of information or unreasonable demands by a section of the community.

The community must accept that in order to build acceptable accommodation in Langa members of the community will have to be moved to Temporary Residence Areas (TRA’s).

There is no alternative if government is to erect adequate housing in the area which is vulnerable to flooding and constant danger of fire in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions.

We call on the community to engage in meaningful dialogue with government on the challanges of relocation and the housing backlog.

At the same time, the DA leader Helen Zille`s accusation that the ANC is behind the protest is wholly without foundation."
