16 April 2018

The ANC has received the heartbreaking news of the passing of comrade Wilberforce Yengwayo Kutta with shock and sadness. Comrade Yengwayo passed away yesterday at his home on what is believed to have been a heart attack.

Yengwayo was an outstanding community leader and a exceptional political activist. He began his activist years during his student days in the late 80`s as the leader at Malizo Senior Secondary School (Matthew Goniwe). He became the chairperson of Student Representative Council (SRC) at Metthew Goniwe Memorial High School.

As a young leader, comrade Yengweyo managed to organize and link all activities of all SRC's in township schools and regularly called joint SRC engagements. During this time, Yengwayo was recruited to join (TOSCO) Township Student Congress resulting in Matthew Goniwe Memorial School being the first school, under Cde Yengwayo's leadership in Khayelitsha to Launch TOSCO Branch, this branch has produced many leaders some ended up joining Mkhonto Wesizwe (MK).

Cde Yengwayo took part in mass student protests for Free Education and Learning for All. During these protests students were harassed and arrested in the area of Khayelitsha police used harsh tactics to beat punish all those who were active. Yengwayo was then elected as the Secretary of COSAS Western Cape Province from 1991 & 1992 because he was already doing matric he could not finished the term at that time.

Cde Yengwayo played a massive role in the establishment of Ward Development Forums in Khayelitsha. He would be elected as the Secretary for Khayelitsha Development Forum where he played a massive role in bringing development closer to the people of Khayelitsha. Yengwayo then moved on to be ANC Regional Executive Committee Member of the ANC in Dullah Omar. He played a role in making sure Schools are built, Khayelitsha Regional Court is built and many developmental project that he facilitated during his time as the secretary for Khayelitsha Development Forum.

ANC is trully saddned by the great loss of Cde Yengwayo who still had so much to offer the movement and the people of the Western Cape.

We send our sincere condolences to his family at this difficult time.
